Top 10 Uses for Avocados

Mark your calendar, millennials, National Avocado Day is upon us this month! As a good millennial myself, I am required by generational law to have avocado toast on 31 July (and in so doing, ensure that I never own property in my lifetime). I don’t just like avocado toast, but I find the avocado to be an incredibly delicious, versatile, and delightful fruit! I have quite literally tried a bunch of the below uses for avocado… with varying degrees of success:

  1. Guacamole

Mexican food didn’t really catch on in South Africa in the way it had in North America and Europe until a few years ago – but OH MY GOD! Guacamole is delicious! A combination of avocado, sea salt, lime juice, tomatoes, onion, and cayenne pepper – this is the most delicious way to eat avo.

  1. Butter Substitute

In baking, so the lore goes, one can use the naturally fatty and malleable avocado to be a healthy substitute for butter. Maybe it works with some foods – but it certainly didn’t work for the brownies I tried. I took one bite and asked my husband to finish the entire pan.

  1. Hair Mask

I tested out an old wives’ tale I read online about how avocado makes your hair luscious, shiny, and hydrated. No – not consumption of avocados – but actual literal mashed-up avocado flesh spread evenly onto your hair. To be fair, my hair did look luscious, shiny, and hydrated after, but it felt very weird washing it out. There may or may not have been some residual clumps.

  1. Skin Product

Imagine walking through the store and seeing an “avocado night treatment mask” – I can feel my skin looking more youthful already! In reality, avos contain calcium, iron, potassium, and a bunch of other vitamins that actually will revitalise your skin.

  1. The Avo-Rita

What do you get when you mix an avocado and a margarita? This. Is it a cocktail? Is it a soup? Do these questions even matter after 3 avo-ritas? Nope.

  1. Avocado Marmalade

Tired of just putting mashed avocado on your toast? Why not go for some spreadable, sweet, avocado marmalade? Hey, it’s fruit, so it’s not as weird as you might think.

  1. Avocado Soup

This being a soup blog and all, I couldn’t leave off a delicious serving of cream of avocado soup off the list!

  1. Avocado Stone Massage

Hear me out – they’re small, round, and have a lot of built-in lubrication. Why not use a couple of avocado pits to facilitate a relaxing foot massage?

  1. Avo Crème Brulée

Vegans can get very creative with desserts. I have not tried this… and to be honest, I think I’m a little afraid to. However, I couldn’t not add it to my list because of how absolutely unusual it sounds.

  1. Avocado on Pizza

I saved my favourite use of avo for last – as a topping on pizza. While I am writing for a soup blog and my goal is to encourage healthy eating, having a bacon and feta pizza topped with avo might be the most delicious thing on the whole planet.

Happy National Avocado Day, everyone – hope the above list gave you some ideas to help celebrate!
